The settlement of Nymfaio, formerly “Niveasta” or “Neveska” is an old village of Vlachs, which was inhabited for the first time in 1385 by Vlachs Odites[1], who were a latin-speaking ethnic group native to Macedonia. They guarded Egnatia Odos for 1400 years and had to flee to the mountains after several tough battles with the Ottomans. Nymfaio is a traditional, preservable stone-built settlement, which is situated at an altitude of 1350m on the Mt Vitsi in an alpine location of unique natural beauty. It belongs to the municipality of Amintaio, like Aghios Panteleimonas. The latter is situated at a distance of just 22km from Nymfaio. Thousands of visitors come here every year, especially during winter.

The visitors will be enchanted by the picturesque cobbled streets and they will admire the unique architectural style of the settlement. It has, also, won the second prize of a European competition awarding the best original settlements.
